Walls, Doors, and New Beginnings ⛅

Hello!

Cody here. As we gear up for uncommon [worship] this Sunday we’re thinking about newness…

“Every new beginning
Comes from some other
Beginning’s end…”

Ah, yes… the wisdom of late 90’s pop rock.

In case you don’t know the line, it’s from a song called Closing Time by Semisonic. And if you don’t know it, well, then… I’m glad you finally came out from under your rock to read this email. 😉

Now, even though that song is about grabbing the last round and closing up the bar, I find myself hanging on that line. “Every new beginning, comes from some other beginning’s end.” As I typed that line, I let out a heavy sigh. And it’s for two reasons…

One, I’ve known my fair share of endings. Endings that came from what felt like THE beginning. You know? That thing that happened for you that seemed so good and so right, that you thought, “this is it”, “I’ve arrived.” Maybe it was finding the “one”. Maybe it was a new career. Maybe it was an amazing taco shop. Whatever that beginning was, it was exciting and seemed like everything you had been waiting for.

Until it ended.

And you.

were.

crushed.

You thought you’d never have something like that again. You felt like you hit a wall, and there was nothing more to look forward to.

But some time after that, that ending gave way to something new.

If you’re in the midst of that new beginning, lean in. We don’t get them very often, so let yourself experience it. It’s not always gonna be easy. But the best things never are.

Now, if you’re still in the ending, and you haven’t seen the new beginning… If you’re still stuck against the wall… I am here to tell you that maybe your wall… maybe, it’s not a wall at all. Maybe it’s a door. Cause if there’s one thing I know (besides 90’s rock lyrics), it’s this: what feels like a hard stop is often only the start of something new.

And that’s the second reason I love those lyrics…

Because I have seen new beginnings come from the bitterest of ends. To be totally transparent, I am in a new beginning that came from a very rough end. And let me tell you, if someone came to me during that ending and told me what this new beginning was really going to look like, I wouldn’t have believed them. Because when you’re in the midst of the death of something, new life seems like a distant and impossible hope.

But can I give you some hope today?

If you’re in the midst of an ending, believe me when I say, a new beginning is on it’s way. The dying of what is, will certainly hurt. But it WILL give way to new life.

So hang in there!

Oh! And here’s some more rock lyrics to keep you going…

“Yeah, in this wasteland where I’m livin’
There is a crack in the door filled with light
And it’s all that I need to get by
Yeah in this wasteland where I’m livin’
There is a crack in the door filled with light
And it’s all that I need to shine”
